Dixie Tub Thumpers meets every Monday morning at 7:00 a.m. until 8:15 a.m. at JB's Restaurant located at 1245 South Main Street, St. George, Utah. The early morning buffet is wonderful, and there is no minimum charge, but there is an automatic 20% tip added to your bill. The only times we do not meet is when the date falls on a significant holiday such as Christmas, New Year's Day, etc.
The name of our Toastmasters Club was the result of our combining St. George's (or Southern Utah's) nickname of "Dixie" with the historical name for political speakers in the 1840's and 1850's in the pre-Civil War era in the United States. They, for lack of a high place to speak from or electronic means for amplifying their voices, commonly would turn a large wash tub upside down and use it to stand on to speak. Because they frequently tended to speak about personal issues, many of which were highly controversial at the time, such speakers were commonly viewed as being outspoken, vociferous and noisy, and frequently tended to be loud, boisterous, ranting speakers who gestured with great fervor. In other words, they spoke or "thumped" on top of a tub, and hence the name, Tub Thumper.
